Dark is a German science fiction thriller television series co-created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese. The story follows characters from the fictional town of Winden, Germany, as they pursue the truth in the aftermath of a child’s disappearance. They follow connections between four estranged families to unravel a sinister time-travel conspiracy that spans several generations. The series explores the existential implications of time and its effect on human nature and life. It features an ensemble cast.

Dark debuted on 1 December 2017 on Netflix; it is the service’s first German-language original series. Dark received widespread critical acclaim for its cast, direction, writing, tone, visuals, musical score, and the ambition and complexity of its narrative. In 2021, the BBC ranked the series as the 58th greatest TV series of the 21st century.

Sex & Nudity – Moderate:

  • A couple is shown having sex briefly at the start of the episode. He’s shown on top of her. Her teenage son yells up to them (not related to their sex) and they stop. Her breasts are clearly shown as he climbs off her. They’re shown getting dressed, and kissing, and he climbs out the window.
  • A couple is seen kissing passionately at night at a school.
  • A man and a woman make out a few times in secret before the man stops her.
  • A woman and a teenager are shown looking at themselves in a mirror (split screen–they’re not together), both wearing robes, and both remove the robes. The camera zooms on on the teenager to avoid exposing her breasts. The older woman’s breasts are exposed and she rubs them (like an examination, not sexual).
  • A prostitute speaks graphically about a client’s penis and what it feels like in her mouth.
  • A teenage girl is shown getting undressed in a locker room. Shown from the back removing sweater, shirt, and bra. No nudity.
  • A teenage couple is shown having sex in a locker room, fully clothed. She’s in a leotard shown sitting on his lap and kissing. Her hand reaches below the camera view and it’s implied she undoes his buckle and guides him inside her. She continues to ride him and moans softly. No nudity.
  • A teenage couple discusses plans to have sex. She tells him to get a condom.
  • A teenage couple is shown kissing and removing clothing (same couple that previously discussed plans to have sex). She’s shown in a bra. A young girl spies through a window.
  • A boy and a girl make out in a room. The boy takes off his shirt and then takes off the girl’s shirt, however, no graphic nudity is shown as she is wearing a bra. While the two were involved, a girl accidentally ends up seeing them.
  • A boy is falsely charged with raping a girl.
  • A teenage couple is shown in bed together topless. They kiss and then she gets out of bed. Her breasts are shown clearly as she gets out of bed.

Violence & Gore – Moderate:

  • At the start of the episode a man can be seen hanging himself, he can be heard choking offscreen.
  • A man is seen covered in blood.
  • A boy punches a wall repeatedly. Later his knuckles are seen bloodied by this.
  • A young boy trips inside a cave and injures his leg. He then proceeds to limp out of the cave.
  • A woman attacks another woman. She slaps her until the latter falls down on the ground, bleeding.
  • A man is taken prisoner and then clubbed by multiple men.

Profanity – Mild:

  • Several uses of F*ck

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking – Mild:

  • A student is seen smoking a joint at school, a girl then approaches him, smokes his joint, and tells him she’s had better.
  • A group of teenagers meets up to look for a hidden stash of weed.
  • In a scene, two students are seen smoking cigarettes. The scene lasts for almost 5 seconds and is so brief.

Frightening & Intense Scenes – Moderate:

  • The overall tone of the episode is very eerie and frightening, which would easily disturb younger audiences.
  • Birds start falling from the sky which shocks an old man who rushes inside his car.
  • A gruesome collision between two cars takes place. One of the drivers dies instantly while the other suffers brain damage.
  • At the end of the episode a child’s corpse is found, the child’s face is seen rotting. His eyes are along with the top half of his face has been melted.
  • A young girl describes seeing a rape.
  • We can see an adult male hitting a 9-years-old boy with the clear intention to kill him. Some blood can be seen.
  • A man attempts to kill a young boy by smashing his head with a brick, repeatedly. The scene cuts to the boy’s head and its gruesome injury. Very graphic.
  • Learning the truth about himself and his future leaves Jonas helpless and broken.
